According to Greek mythology, Perseus cut off the head of Medusa, the only one of the three gorgonians that was mortal. Legend has it that blood spilled from Medusa's head into the sea and the coral was born. Its virtues were praised by doctors in Ancient Greece and later by medieval Arabic medicine.
